Helical compression spring

Helical compression spring, also known as a cylindrical compression spring, is a coil compression springs subjected to axial pressure. When a helical compression spring receives an external load, each coil of its coil will be deformed, the lattice structure inside the metal will be distorted, the relative position of the atoms will be changed, and energy will be stored in the process. After the external force is removed, the stored energy is released in the form of potential energy, as the internal stress of the metal drives the spring back to its original state.

Type of helical compression spring

Helical compression spring can be divided into five types according to their application scenarios, which are: constant pitch helical coil springs, conical coil springs, barrel coil springs, hourglass coil springs and helical coil springs with variable windings.

1.Standard screwfix compression springs
For the constant pitch (space between coils) all coils of the compression spring are equally spaced. The constant pitch coil spring is the standard known compression spring.

2.Conical Compression springs
Conical compression springs have a pyramid shape. The pyramid shape of the helical coil spring makes it possible to supply forces in a limited space (axial space). This is because all windings are folded together at full compression.

3.Barrel coil springs
this spring owes its name to its appearance which resembles a barrel. A barrel spring is a type of compression spring that produces linear forces where the upper and lower outer diameter are smaller than the middle outer diameter. This allows the spring to save space.

4.Hourglass coil springs
The fourth type of compressible spring is built like an hourglass, this helical coil spring has a higher upper and lower outer diameter compared to the middle outer diameter. These helical compression spring have a high stability and just like the conical compression springs they are suitable for smaller spaces.

5.Compression springs with variabel pitch
These compression springs are not constructed with an equal distance between the coils, but the coils are made in sets with a certain space between the coils.

How to measure the size of helical compression spring

In case you are unsure of your helical spring’s physical dimensions,You can refer to the following method.
Inner Diameter: Place the caliper’s inside jaws inside your spring’s inner diameter while your spring is put at its vertical position.

Outer Diameter: Vertically place the spring between the caliper’s outside jaws and make sure that they are perfectly aligned with the axis (center) of your spring’s cylindrical shape.

Wire Diameter: Keeping your spring vertical, place the caliper’s outside jaws on the outer edges of the wire diameter.

Free Length: Horizontally place the helical spring between the caliper’s outside jaws. Make sure you are including the whole part of the spring without leaving any edges sticking out.

Total Coils: Count your spring’s coils by looking at your spring horizontally with the tip of the first coil aligned at the center. Begin counting from the second coil and stop at the last coil.

Application of helical compression springs

Cylindrical compression springs are widely used in a variety of mechanical equipment, such as cars, trains, air conditioners, computers, etc., the scope of use includes:

  1. Automotive field: helical coil spring is used in automotive suspension system, transmission, clutch, brake system, etc.
  2. Home appliance field: helical spring is used for home appliance motor, ventilator, compressor, etc.
  3. Mechanical field: helical spring is used for supporting, buffering, transmitting force and other parts of mechanical equipment.

In short, as a common mechanical elastic element, helical spring is widely used in various fields. The functions of cushioning, supporting and transmitting force provide important guarantees for the normal operation of mechanical equipment.
